Origin and history

The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Maguelone, located in Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone in the Hérault, is a 12th and 13th century building built on an ancient wisigothe island. Ranked a historic monument in 1840, it was the heart of an episcopal and canonical city, marked by Roman, wisigoth and medieval influences. Its Romanesque architecture, reinforced as a fortress, reflects its strategic and religious role in an area often threatened by invasions.

Maguelone's origins date back to ancient times, with Roman and Etruscan remains discovered during excavations in 1967. In the sixth century, under the Wisigoths, the island became a bishopric, first mentioned in 533. The first cathedral, destroyed in the seventh century, was replaced after the Carolingian reconquest. In the 11th century, Bishop Arnaud rebuilt the building and installed a chapter of canons, marking the renewal of the site after centuries of partial abandonment.

The 12th and 13th centuries marked the climax of Maguelone. The current cathedral, built under the bishops Galtier, Raymond and Jean de Montlaur, combines religious and defensive functions, with walls of more than two metres thick and protective towers. The site, pontifical land, even welcomes popes like Gélase II in 1118. Its decline began in the 15th century, when the bishopric was transferred to Montpellier in 1536, allowing the cathedral to deteriorate before its restoration in the 19th century.

The western portal, adorned with bas-reliefs of the 12th and 13th centuries, illustrates Languedoc Romanesque art. Inside, the sober nave and canon rostrum reveal a complex liturgical organization. The chapel Saint-Augustin, the vestige of the first cathedral, and the transept to the Lombard chapels bear witness to architectural developments. The 19th and 20th century excavations exhumed wisigoth sarcophagus, Roman epitaphs and ancient foundations, confirming the historical importance of the site.

Today, Maguelone combines heritage and contemporary life. The site, restored by Frédéric Fabrège in the 19th century, houses an ESAT dedicated to professional integration and an annual medieval music festival. The cathedral, still a place of worship, retains its spiritual and cultural role, perpetuating a 15 centuries old tradition of hospitality.
