Origin and history
La grotto du Renard is a natural cavity located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It lies at the edge of the Renard cliff, near Cape Morgiou, within the calanques. This cave, like other nearby cavities (Grotte de la Triperie, Cave du Figuier, Cave Cosquer), has been classified as historical monuments since 2 September 1992 because of its archaeological and geological importance.
The cave has a rectilinear gallery submerged at 9 meters below sea level, extending for forty meters before reaching an empty room. Its origin dates back to the Paleolithic period, during which it could have served as a shelter or a place of life for prehistoric populations. It is part of a protected archaeological complex, including several caves and their remains.
The 1992 classification covers not only the Renard Cave, but also the surrounding archaeological plots and remains, such as the Cosquer Caves, Triperia and Figuier. This classification aims to preserve these fragile sites, witness to ancient human occupations and the karst Mediterranean landscapes. No information is available on its current accessibility to the public or its tourist use.
