Origin and history
The medieval cellars of Montreuil-sur-Mer are a set of basements built in the 13th and 14th centuries, in a flourishing economic context. Located at 88-90 rue Pierre-Ledent, at the corner of the street of the Jews, they are distinguished by their ribbed vaults, originally supported by monolithic columns of sandstone. These architectural elements, partially integrated into later walls, demonstrate a suitable reuse of the building over the centuries. Their quality of construction and preservation make it a notable example of the medieval underground heritage.
These cellars, owned by the commune of Montreuil-sur-Mer, were listed as historical monuments on 14 December 2012. Their protection concerns all areas at the corner of both streets, highlighting their heritage value. Their architecture reflects both advanced construction techniques for the time and adaptation to local economic needs, probably related to trade or storage of goods.
The precise location of the cellars in the department of Pas-de-Calais ( Hauts-de-France region), as well as their mention in the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm their historical importance. However, their current status and accessibility remain partially documented, with a location accuracy considered "passable" (note 5/10). No information is available on their openness to the public or their contemporary use.
