Origin and history
The church of the Assumption of Cazères, located in the commune of Cazères in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), dates back to the early 14th century. This historic monument has undergone several alterations over the centuries, but retains notable Gothic architectural elements, including its portal. It consists of columns with carved capitals, surmounted by a third-point arch divided into six compartments. A triangular pediment adorned with hooks crowned together, while two side niches, decorated with leafy columns, complete the composition.
Inside, carved capitals represent a variety of motifs, such as fantastic animals, salamanders or griming heads, reflecting an expressive Gothic art. The portal, with its studs and pediments, illustrates a technical and artistic mastery characteristic of this period. The building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 18 November 1926, now belongs to the municipality of Cazères. Its state of conservation and location, which is considered satisfactory a priori, make it an accessible heritage, although its current use (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the sources.
The architecture of the church reflects the regional influences of the time, where religious buildings served both as places of worship and symbolic marks for local communities. The sculptures, especially those of capitals, could have a didactic or moralizing dimension, common in medieval art. The presence of fantastic motifs also suggests a symbolic interpretation, perhaps linked to beliefs or legends of the time.
