Origin and history

The Church of the Assumption of Cemboing is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Cemboing, Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built between 1777 and 1783 according to the original plans of architect Anatole Amoudru, his plans were modified in 1780 by Claude-Joseph Bretet. This monument illustrates the religious architecture of the late eighteenth century, with local influences and subsequent adaptations.

Between 1843 and 1845, the vaults of the church were rebuilt under the direction of Maximin Painchaux, meeting structural or aesthetic needs not specified in the sources. The interior decoration of the sanctuary, created between 1857 and 1862 by painter Joseph-Constant Menissier, adds a major artistic dimension to the building, reflecting the liturgical tastes of the nineteenth century.

The church was listed as historic monuments by order of 20 April 1995, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality of Cemboing, it bears witness to the architectural and artistic evolution of rural churches in Franche-Comté, between the Ancient Regime and the modern period. The successive changes, both structural and decorative, underline its adaptation to the cultural and aesthetic needs of the eras traversed.
