Origin and history

The closed cemetery of Servel is a funeral building located in Lannion, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. It is distinguished by its enclosure, a remarkable architectural element which led to its partial inscription in title of historical monuments by order of 22 December 1927. This cemetery, located on Rue du Calvaire, embodies a religious and memorial heritage typical of the region, reflecting Breton funeral traditions.

The cemetery is integrated into the urban fabric of Lannion, a commune marked by its medieval history and its development around port and craft activities. At the time of its construction, closed cemeteries played a central role in community life, serving as both a burial place, a gathering place and a social gathering. Their enclosure, often in stone, symbolized a boundary between the sacred and the profane, while protecting the graves from the weather and animals.

The inscription of the cemetery of Servel in 1927 underlines its heritage and architectural importance. This type of monument, frequent in Brittany, reflects the evolution of funeral practices and the spatial organization of Breton cities over the centuries. Today, there remains a place of memory and a preserved example of the local cultural heritage.
