Cemetery Cross: Registration by Order of 22 November 1949
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Lavalette is a religious monument located in the municipality of Lavalette, in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region. Dating from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its location on the wall of the choir of the local church, thus marking the sacred space of the dedicated cemetery.
Ranked among historical monuments since 1949, this cross illustrates the late medieval funeral heritage of the region. Its official registration, by decree of 22 November 1949, underlines its heritage importance for the commune and the department. The property of the building belongs to the municipality of Lavalette.
At the time of its construction, the cemetery crosses played a central role in the religious and social practices of rural communities. They served as a spiritual landmark for burials and processions, while symbolizing divine protection for the deceased. In the 16th century Languedoc, marked by a predominantly agricultural economy and strong parish structures, these monuments also reflected the collective organization around the church, the heart of village life.
