Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Athie is a 15th century historical monument, located in the commune of Athie, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This type of monument, typical of medieval villages, served both as a spiritual landmark and as a gathering place for funeral ceremonies. Its classification by decree of 29 December 1925 shows its heritage importance and its preservation by the French authorities.

In the 15th century, the cemetery crosses played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities. They marked the entrance to the sacred places and reminded the faithful of their faith, while serving as a landmark in villages often lacking monumental architecture. In Burgundy, a region marked by a strong Christian tradition and a feudal organization still influential, these crosses also symbolized the authority of the Church over daily life.

Their preservation until today offers a material testimony of the cultural and religious practices of the medieval era.
