Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Laval-le-Purié is a wrought iron work erected in 1813, as attests the vintage engraved on its barrel. It is distinguished by its floral motifs in sheet metal, typical of the craft of the early nineteenth century. Although the cross itself dates from 1813, its stone pedestal bears the date of 1921, indicating a restoration or partial replacement at that time. The monument is still located in the enclosure of the communal cemetery, for which it was originally designed.
The cross was listed as historic monuments on 13 June 1997, recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects both the wrought iron structure and its stone base, identified under cadastral reference B 133. The property of the monument belongs to the commune of Laval-le-Purié, in the Doubs department, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
The pedestal and the base, although partially renewed in 1921, were harmoniously integrated into the whole, illustrating continuity between periods. The date of 1812, sometimes mentioned in the sources, seems to be an error or confusion with the official date of 1813, engraved on the monument. The cross embodies a local example of religious and funerary art, characteristic of small rural French communes in the early 19th century.
This type of cemetery cross played a central role in community life, marking a place of collective recollection and memory. At the time of its construction, Laval-le-Prieré, like many villages in the Doubs, was mainly oriented towards agriculture and local crafts. The cemetery crosses also served as a visual and symbolic landmark, strengthening the religious and social identity of the inhabitants.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm the historical importance of this monument. The cross is also referenced in the list of historical monuments of the Doubs, highlighting its interest in the study of the regional funerary heritage. Its state of conservation and precise location (approximate GPS coordinates: 5004 In Laval) are an accessible subject of study for researchers and local history enthusiasts.
