Origin and history

The Gérard-Marchant hospital in Toulouse, originally called Asile de Braqueville, was built between 1852 and 1864 under the direction of architect Jacques-Jean Esquié, on plans inspired by the psychiatric theories of Esquirol. Inaugurated in 1858, he received 260 patients transferred from La Grave Hospital. Its spatial organization, symmetrical and rational, strictly separated the male and female sections, with pavilions connected by covered galleries. The Romano-Gothic chapel and the administrative buildings, of classical inspiration, illustrate the architectural eclecticism of the period. The asylum was awarded at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867 for its architecture.

The establishment owes its name to Dr. Gérard Marchant (1800–71), a Toulouse physician and student of Jean-Baptiste Delaye, who devoted his career to the creation of this asylum. Appointed first director in 1858, he applied innovative methods for the time, emphasizing the therapeutic separation of patients. The site, chosen at Braqueville (whose etymology remains uncertain, perhaps evoking a Goth soldier or exiled Dominicans), became a departmental asylum model. Local materials, such as pink brick and hollow tiles, give it a marked Toulouse identity.

In the 20th century, asylum became a psychiatric hospital in 1937, in tribute to its founder. Damaged during the Second World War (bombing of 1944) and then devastated by the explosion of the AZF factory in 2001, it had to be completely evacuated and rebuilt. This disaster accelerated its modernisation, with a drastic reduction in hospital beds (from 1,000 to 300) to outpatient facilities. Since 2012, the site has been home to a specially designed hospital unit (UHSA) and a castle labeled 20th Century Heritage (2017).

The architecture of the CHGM, partially classified as historical monuments since 2008, reflects the hygienist and moral principles of the 19th century. Colourful facades, English gardens and covered galleries (partly missing) testify to this period. Today, the establishment, with a budget of 65 million euros, faces major challenges: saturation of emergencies, shortage of staff and old premises, as highlighted in the reports of the Regional Chamber of Accounts (2024) and IGAS.

Recent incidents (fires, attacks, reported working conditions) have highlighted the structural difficulties of the CHGM. Despite these crises, he remains a key player in public psychiatry in Occitanie, with services covering general psychiatry, infant-juvenile and prison. Its history, from the alienist asylum to the modern hospital, illustrates the evolution of psychiatric care in France, between architectural heritage and contemporary adaptations.
