Origin and history
The Chalain hotel, located at 15 rue Saint-Georges in Rennes, is an architectural complex composed of two parts: the small hotel, dating from the 17th century, and the large hotel, built in the 18th century. The latter, backed by the first, rises on three floors and has protected facades and roofs since 1967. The building is characterized by a courtyard preceded by a cochère door, with kitchens to the east and stables to the west, under large curved arcades.
During the French Revolution, the hotel welcomed Jean-Baptiste Carrier, a Montagnard member of the Convention, and was temporarily renamed Hotel de la Montagne. In 1831 he became the presbytery of Saint-Germain Church, a position he still occupied. Inside, the rooms retain their original 18th century carpentry, bearing witness to its rich past.
The building was erected on ancient vines belonging to the Cordeliers, a religious order present in the area. Its protected elements (façades, roofs) were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 18 January 1967. Today, the hotel belongs to an association and remains a remarkable example of Rennes' architectural heritage, combining political, religious and urban history.
