Origin and history
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Cambrai was built in the first half of the 20th century, under the direction of architect Louis Leprince-Ringuet. Missioned in 1923, he designed a new consular hotel in the administrative area of Cambrai. The building combines neo-regionalist references, visible in its brick and stoned cement façade, and Art Deco elements, especially in its interiors. The flat sculptures, representing allegories of commerce, industry and abundance, reinforce this hybrid style.
Inside, the Art Deco influence is marked by black and white glass windows made by Auguste Labouret. Several spaces, such as the entrance hall, the main staircase with its wrought iron ramp, the first floor gallery, the council hall, the president's office, the commission room and the library, have retained their original décor and furniture. These elements testify to the architectural and artistic richness of the time.
The building has been partially protected since 2009, with an inscription under the title of Historic Monuments for its facades, roofs, stained glass windows, and some interior decorations. It illustrates the importance of chambers of commerce in local economic development at the beginning of the twentieth century, while reflecting the architectural trends of the inter-war period.
Located on Place de la République in Cambrai, the building is part of an urban setting marked by a desire for modernity and institutional representation. Its architecture, combining regional tradition and innovation, makes it a remarkable example of the industrial and administrative heritage of Hauts-de-France.
