Origin and history
The farm of Chanial, located in the village of Chacornac on the commune of Cayres (Haute-Loire), dates from the 19th century. It perfectly illustrates the traditional rural architecture of the southwestern plateaux of Velay, characterized by the use of local volcanic stone. Its buildings, organized in square around a central courtyard, include a house and outbuildings (stable on the ground floor, barn upstairs accessible by an external staircase).
Built to meet the agricultural needs of the region, this farm has retained its original arrangements, offering an intact testimony of 19th-century farming practices and lifestyles in Auvergne. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments by decree of 10 September 1990 underlines its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the agrarian history of the Velay.
Historical sources, such as Robert Chamonard's work on the agrarian structures of Western Velay (1967), underline the importance of this type of farm in the organization of volcanic plateaus. Chanial's farm, with its one-storey barn and raised barn, reflects a functional adaptation to the relief and climate, while embodying local expertise in volcanic stone construction.
Today, the farm remains a geographical and cultural landmark for the commune of Cayres, classified under the code Insee 43042. Although its access and current uses (visit, rental) are not specified in the sources, its status as a historic monument makes it a place of interest for the study of the rural heritage of Auvergnat.
