Notre-Dame-de-Pitié votive chapel (Box ZB 95): inscription by order of 16 July 1970

Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel in Etrun is a religious building built during the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Located in the commune of Etrun, in the department of Pas-de-Calais, it embodies a typical example of the votive chapels of this period, often erected as a sign of devotion or of gratitude for divine protection.

Classified as a Historical Monument, this chapel was registered by decree on 16 July 1970. It is now owned by the municipality of Etrun. Votive chapels, like this one, played a central role in the spiritual and community life of the villages, serving as a place of prayer and gathering for the inhabitants.

The location of the chapel, although documented in the Merimée base with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory", remains approximate according to the GPS coordinates available. Its architecture and history reflect the religious and cultural practices of the Hauts-de-France region in the early seventeenth century, an era marked by strong Marian devotion and the construction of many similar buildings.
