Origin and history

The Trinité Chapel, located in the hamlet of Belpuig in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is a Romanesque building dating back at least to the ninth century. The site, mentioned in 899 as Sant Pere de la Serra, already housed a parish church linked to noble families such as that of Estève and Anna, granddaughter of Count Berà. Alleu (free property) associated with this place was transferred to the church of Elne in 961 after the death of Ava de Cerdagne, widow of Count Miron II.

The present building, built mainly in the 11th and 12th centuries, has a northern nave of the 11th century later enlarged by a southern collateral. Its Lombard Romanesque bedside, adorned with strips and archatures, contrasts with the baroque additions of the 17th and 18th centuries, such as retables or rededication to the Trinity. Ranked a Historical Monument in 1951, the chapel revealed during recent restorations medieval murals and a 12th century Roman Christ, partially altered by later restorations.

Architecturally, the chapel is distinguished by its semi-circular apse with Lombard decor, its two vaulted stone naves, and a southern facade combining murderous, broken arched door, and curved windows. The furniture includes remarkable pieces such as a 14th century Virgin assize, a painted Gothic cross, and a reliquary hidden in Romanesque Christ, dated 1710. The site, a former place of pilgrimage, illustrates the evolution of religious and artistic practices in Roussillon.

Historical sources highlight its role in the medieval Catalan landscape, between Conflent and Vallespir, as well as its link with the local lords. Recent studies (Mathon, Abélanet) have highlighted its transformations, from Carolingian origins to baroque additions to Romanesque campaigns. The chapel remains a major testimony of Catalan Romanesque art, mixing Lombard influences and local traditions.

Exteriorly, the masonry reveals two distinct phases: rough rubble for the primitive nave, cut stone for the abside and the southern facade, the latter adorned with a checker frieze and symbolic motifs (snails, carved heads). Inside, the communication between the naves is carried out by arches in the middle, while the bell tower-wall, typical of the region, crowns the western facade. These elements reflect a constant adaptation to liturgical and community needs.

Today, the chapel of the Trinity, a communal property, attracts for its movable heritage (retreadables, statues) and its hybrid architecture. The restorations preserved rare traces, such as absidial paintings or Romanesque Christ, while stressing its importance in the network of Romanesque churches of the Pyrénées-Orientales. Its ranking and location make it a point of interest for the history of art and pilgrimage in Occitanie.
