Origin and history

The St John's Chapel of Altiani, also known as San Ghjuvanni du Ponte a u Larice, is a medieval religious building located in the municipality of Altiani in Upper Corsica. It is part of a monumental complex including a bridge, located at the so-called "bridge of Altiani" on the Tavignano, at the junction of roads D314 and RT50. This chapel was once the pieve (main church) of the Rogna, dependent on the ancient diocese of Aleria. Its architecture and location reflect its historical importance in the local religious organization.

The chapel, owned by the commune, has been listed as a historical monument since 14 January 1977. Its construction dates back to the 10th or 11th centuries, during which time it played a central role in the spiritual and community life of the region. The site, marked by the presence of the adjacent medieval bridge, illustrates the importance of communication axes and places of worship in medieval Corsica. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its heritage status and its integration into the historical landscape of Corsica.

The ensemble, composed of the chapel and the bridge, bears witness to the exchanges and the territorial organization of the period. Although the details of its founders or its precise use are rare, its ranking and strategic location between Aleria and Corte make it an emblematic site. The chapel remains today a major vestige of the medieval Corsican heritage, open to visit under the management of the municipality.
