Origin and history

The Beaudelle Chapel of Aire-sur-la-Lys was built in 1868 to complete a development project that began two centuries earlier. This monument, representative of religious architecture of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, was in an urban context marked by progressive transformations. Its style and location, near the Rivage wharf, made it an important heritage element of the city, although its preservation quickly asked questions.

During the second half of the 20th century, the chapel underwent changes that profoundly altered its original volumes and aesthetics. In the absence of adequate maintenance, the building was deemed dangerous and finally destroyed in 1998, despite its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments in 2003 (facades and roofs). This disappearance illustrates the challenges of heritage conservation in the face of urban pressures and public management choices.

Designed by architect Mayeur L., the chapel was originally owned by a public establishment. Its precise location, 6 Place du Rivage, and its registration in the general inventory (Mérimée base) testify to its local historic importance. Available photographs, such as those of Jonathan F08 under Creative Commons license, now constitute the only visual remains of this missing monument.
