Origin and history
The chapel of the Assumption of Brantigny, located in Piney in the Aube department, is a religious building built between the 4th quarter of the 15th century and the 1st quarter of the 16th century. It is distinguished by its remarkable furniture, including medieval octagonal baptismal fonts and 16th century limestone ovoid fonts, as well as pavement tiles of the same period. A limestone lamentation, bearing traces of polychromy, also bears witness to its artistic heritage.
The chapel was historically attached to the abbey of Molesme as early as 1110, then became a parish of the dean of Brienne, with Piney as a branch. In 1633 it still retained this status, including the hamlets of the Doyer and the Hautes-Hayes. Its stained glass windows, partly from the workshops of the Carmelites of Mans, bore the arms of the Reaulx family. Ranked a historic monument in 1987, it now belongs to the town of Piney.
The site also houses decorative and liturgical elements, such as 16th-century stained glass windows, now missing or replaced. Its classification covers the entire chapel (Cadastre G 19), highlighting its heritage importance. The precise location, 1 Rue du Lavoir in Piney, and its Insee code (10287) confirm its anchoring in the Great East, a region rich in medieval Christian buildings.
