Origin and history

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the Chapel of the Grey Penitents, is a Catholic religious building located in Sospel, Alpes-Maritimes department. Built in 1619, it is the work of the Stigmat Brotherhood and the Conception of the Virgin, also called the Brotherhood of the Grey Penitents. This building illustrates the religious architecture of the Counter-Reform in the region.

The chapel is located in Place Saint-Michel, in the heart of Sospel, and was listed as historical monuments on 17 April 1952. This ranking reflects its heritage importance and its role in local religious history. Today it belongs to the municipality of Sospel.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, indicate that the chapel was built in the first half of the 17th century, with architectural elements that could date back to the second half of the 16th century. Its style and function reflect the devotional practices of the brotherhoods of penitents, very active in south-eastern France at that time.

The chapel is also mentioned in the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture, with a precise location on Place Saint-Michel. The protected elements include the entire chapel, identified under the K 820 cadastre. Its inscription among historical monuments makes it a protected and valued site for its architectural and spiritual heritage.
