Origin and history

The Chapel of the Confrérie Sainte-Croix, known as Casazza, is located on the central square of Calenzana, in Corsica, opposite the church of Saint-Blaise. Built in the 16th century, it was profoundly redesigned in the 19th century, especially in its interior decor. Its sober architecture is distinguished by a facade rhythmic by two pilasters, a central door and a high window, topped by a triangular pediment. Inside, the unique nave, finished with a flat bedside choir, preserves a 19th-century decoration: gypsy pilasters, cornice with denticles, and a painted vault depicting Saint-Antoine Ermite.

The chapel served as a seat for local brotherhoods, secular religious institutions playing a central role in the social and spiritual life of Corsica. It was classified by order of 2 March 1981, at the same time as the nearby Saint-Blaise church. Its restoration in 2010 preserved its architectural and artistic heritage, testifying to the importance of the brotherhoods in Corsican religious history.

Calenzana, a village located in the ancient piève d'Olmia in Balagne, was a strategic place during the Corsican revolts against Genoa in the eighteenth century. The chapel, by its central position, embodied the cultural and religious resistance of local communities. Its history is part of that of the Balagne, a region marked by conflicts, a strong religious identity (cult of Sainte-Restitude, patron saint of the region) and a social organization around the brotherhoods.

The interior decor, typical of the 19th century, reflects the late Baroque influence in Corsica, mixing structural sobriety and delicate ornaments. The gypsum pilasters and the painted vault illustrate the local craftsmanship of the period, while the classical pediment evokes genoese architectural models, then dominant in the island. The chapel remains a symbol of piety and community cohesion in Calenzana.

Today, the chapel of the Confrérie Sainte-Croix continues to be a place of memory and celebrations, integrated with the Corsican religious heritage. Its proximity to other listed monuments, such as the Church of St.Restitude (XI-15th centuries) or the nearby Genoese towers, makes it a key part of the historical circuit of Calenzana, attracting visitors and pilgrims.
