Origin and history

The chapel of the Santa Devota Brotherhood, located in Piedicroce in Corsica, dates from the seventeenth century. It is part of a larger architectural ensemble, including the parish church, and is distinguished by its elongated plane, with a vaulted nave with glasses and a chorus covered with a cul-de-four. Its entrance tympanum is decorated with a fresco, and an inscription of 1751 attests to his belonging to the brotherhood of the Penitents of Piedicroce, Fontanastazza, Pastoreccia and Pied-Orezza-Campodonicu.

The chapel, classified as Historic Monument by order of 12 October 1976, was restored in 1999. It houses the Holy Devote Brotherhood, as its name indicates, and its edification reflects the importance of the brotherhoods of penitents in Corsican religious and social life in modern times. These brotherhoods played a central role in devotional practices, processions and community support.

The inscription engraved on the building, CONFRATERNITA / PIEDICROCE E FONTANA/STAZZONA E PASTORECCIA/PIED'OREZZA CAMPODONICO NEL ANNO MDCCLI, highlights its territorial anchor and its collective function. The chapel, owned by the commune, illustrates Corsican Baroque religious architecture, marked by decorative sobriety and harmonious integration with the local building.
