Origin and history

The Chapel of Mercy, also known as the Church of Mercy, is an ancient Catholic chapel located on Rue des Augustins in Limoux, in the department of Aude. Originally it was part of the Augustine convent, established in the city from 1358. The building was partially destroyed by fire in 1685, then rebuilt in a baroque style, with the exception of its southern facade, which retains a remarkable medieval elevation. Its 19th-century interior is inspired by that of the Cathedral of Saint-Michel de Carcassonne, while its Gothic-style western porch is decorated with an original terracotta decor.

After sheltering the nuns of the order of the Sisters of Nevers until the 1980s, the chapel gradually deteriorated due to infiltrations linked to a defective roof. Closed to worship in 2012 for security reasons, it is saved from abandonment thanks to the action of the association Friends of Mercy in 2019. The municipality then undertook renovation works (carpent and roof), financed to the tune of 200 000 €. The building is finally listed for historical monuments on 24 January 2020, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

The chapel is distinguished by its mix of medieval, Baroque and neo-Gothic architectures, reflecting the different periods of its history. Its bell tower, sacristy and a cellar under the choir are among the protected elements. Today, it remains a testimony of the religious and urban heritage of Limoux, between Augustinian heritage and contemporary restorations.
