Origin and history
The chapel of La Roche-Foulques is a religious building located in Soucelles, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in different periods (XII, XVI and XVIII centuries), it reflects various architectural influences, typical of the successive transformations of places of worship in Anjou. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1973 reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this testimony of medieval, reborn and modern times.
The chapel is part of a rural context where religious buildings played a central role in community life. In the Middle Ages, chapels often served as a place of prayer for local lords or inhabitants of hamlets far from the main parishes. In Anjou, a region marked by a strong ecclesiastical and seigneurial presence, these buildings were also symbols of power and piety, integrated into the landscape and the daily life of the people.
The inscription of the chapel of the Roche-Foulques in 1973 by ministerial decree allowed its protection and presentation in the local heritage. Available sources, such as the Merimée base or the departmental archives, underline its architectural and historical importance, although details of its founders or its precise uses over the centuries remain partially documented. Today, it is an important part of the heritage of Rives-du-Loir-en-Anjou, accessible to visitors and studied for its stylistic evolution.
