Origin and history

The chapel of Languidou, located in Plovan in Finistère, is a religious building of the middle of the 13th century, although some sources evoke a possible origin in the 12th century. It is considered one of the prototypes of the architectural style of the Pont-Croix School, in rivalry with the collegiate Notre-Dame de Roscudon. His name, Languidou, means "hermitage of Saint Guidou" in Breton, attesting to an ancient monastic settlement, perhaps linked to the British-Celtic migrations of the early Middle Ages.

The chapel is dedicated to Saint Guidou (or Kido), a little documented Breton saint, associated with the protection of sailors and pilgrims. A local legend, reported by Jakez Helias, evokes the disappearance of a navigable river, the river of Kido, buried by the sea, ending the maritime pilgrimages to Languidou. The building, now in ruins, preserves remarkable elements such as its large southern arcades (typical of the Pont-Croix School) and a flamboyant rose added to the bedside around the 14th–15th century.

Two Latin inscriptions engraved on the capitals reveal the names of the master d'oeuvre, Auffray Gurriec (Auvredus Gurreu), and the sponsors, Canon Guillaume and Yves de Revesco, a local hobereau. These inscriptions, dated paleographically around 1250, confirm a construction in two phases (choir and nef). The chapel, partially destroyed in 1794 to build a guard corps, was restored in the 20th century, but approximately.

The site includes a placister (former parish cemetery), a calvary, two protohistoric steles (perhaps iron age), and a devotional fountain dedicated to Saint Gorgon, located nearby. These elements, combined with the legend of St Kido, underline the historical and cultural importance of Languidou, classified as a Historic Monument in 1908. Its architecture, though ruined, bears witness to a rich religious and maritime past, linked to the Basse-Cornouaille and the Bigouden country.
