Origin and history

The chapel of Saint-Martin-du-Vican, located in Nant in Aveyron, is a 12th century religious building. Built of limestone for the nave and tuft for the choir and the abside, it is covered with limestone lauzes laid directly on the vaults, without frames. Its modest architecture reflects local Romanesque techniques.

Originally, the chapel was built in the enclosure of a monastery founded in the 7th century by Saint-Amand and rebuilt at the end of the 10th century 800 metres away. In the 12th century, it served as a parish after the monks left. The building, today in ruins, was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 17 December 1936.

Historical sources mention several names for this place: "Chambre de Saint-Martin-du-Vigan" (base Mérimée), "Former Chapel of Saint-Martin" (map d'État-Major), or "Saint-Martin-du-Vigan" (map of Cassini). Closed to the public, it remains a testimony of the religious and architectural history of the Rouergue.
