Chapelle de Servières (Box AP 310): inscription by decree of 17 November 1992

Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Blaise de Servières is a religious building located in the commune of Villecomtal, in the department of Aveyron, in the Occitanie region. Built between the 12th and 16th centuries, it reflects the architectural and spiritual evolutions of these periods, marked by the development of rural villages and the growing importance of local places of worship. Its designation as historic monuments in 1992 reflects its heritage value and the desire to preserve this medieval and reborn heritage.

Rural chapels like Servières played a central role in the life of communities in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They served not only as places of prayer and religious gathering, but also as social and cultural landmarks for rural inhabitants. In Aveyron, a region marked by a strong agricultural tradition and feudal and then seigneurial organization, these buildings were often linked to daily activities, such as fairs, local pilgrimages or the feasts of patron saints.

Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the organization and beliefs of rural societies in the past.
