Origin and history
The chapel of the Undersigned is a religious building located in Martigné-Briand, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Partly dating from the 14th century, it underwent major transformations in the 18th century, including a revised façade in 1781. Its history is part of an architectural context marked by successive additions, such as the structure of the 15th century nave, reflecting the evolution of local liturgical techniques and needs.
Classified as historical monuments by decree of 3 July 1965, this chapel illustrates the Christian heritage of Anjou. The protected elements include the chapel itself, identified under cadastre D 1002. Although sources mention an origin dating back to the first half of the 12th century, this information remains to be confirmed by further studies. Its current location, near Saint-Arnoul Street, makes it a historic landmark for the commune.
In the Pays de la Loire region, chapels like the Undersigned were central to medieval and modern community life. They served as places of worship, assembly, and sometimes refuges. At the time of its construction, Anjou was a region marked by intense agricultural activity and feudal organization, where religious buildings symbolized both spiritual power and social cohesion.
