Romanesque Chapel (Old) : by order of 4 August 1916

Origin and history

The Romanesque chapel, known as "old", is a religious building located in La Garde, Var department. Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 4 August 1916, it is a typical example of Provencal Romanesque architecture, although its exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources. Its location, at 138 Rue Estienne d'Orves, makes it a point of heritage interest in this town near Toulon.

Romanesque chapels, like La Garde, often played a central role in the life of medieval communities. They served as places of worship, assembly and sometimes refuges. In the Provençal context, these buildings reflected the influence of religious orders and local lords, while integrating into a landscape marked by agriculture, maritime trade and cultural exchanges between the Mediterranean and the hinterland.

Their preservation makes it possible today to study the construction techniques and religious practices of the time.
