Chapelle des Beaumes (cad. G 187): inscription by order of 9 April 1987
Origin and history
La Chapelle des Beaumes is a Romanesque chapel located in Pied-de-Borne, in the department of Lozère, in the Occitanie region. Built in the 13th century, it is distinguished by its simple yet neat architecture, with a unique nave opening onto a semicircular apse. Its gate, decentralized and richly decorated, occupies almost the entire height of the facade. The voussures have a variety of motifs (flowers, stars, animals), while the monolithy tympanum rests on heel crows. This architectural detail suggests a vocation both religious and symbolic, typical of medieval pilgrimage chapels.
The more recent bell tower contrasts with the Romanesque ensemble by its modern style. Inside, the portal does not correspond to the original opening and seems to date from the 18th century, indicating later changes. The chapel was listed as historic monuments in 1987, recognizing its heritage value. Its geographical isolation, in a preserved rural setting, reinforces its historical and spiritual character, linked to medieval devotional practices in Gevaudan.
The protected elements include the entire chapel, as delimited to the cadastre (park G 187). Although the sources do not specify its current use, its listing is evidence of conservation efforts. The carved decorations of the portal, combining geometric and figurative motifs, offer a remarkable example of local Romanesque art, mixing regional influences and Christian symbolism.
