Chapel of the White Penitents: inscription by decree of 29 June 1927

Origin and history

La Chapelle des Penitents blancs is a religious monument located in Aubagne, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is an example of Christian architecture linked to the brotherhoods of penitents, very active in southern France from the Middle Ages. Its designation as historic monuments, effective since 29 June 1927, underscores its local and regional heritage importance.

The brotherhoods of penitents, like the one associated with this chapel, played a central role in the social and spiritual life of Provençal communities. These lay groups, often organized by dress color (here the "whites"), participated in the processions, charity and accompaniment of the deceased. The chapel served as a meeting place, prayer and preservation of the liturgical objects of the brotherhood.

Its architecture, although not detailed in the sources, generally reflects the sobriety and functionality characteristic of these buildings.
