Origin and history
The Chapel of the Penitents of Treignac is a religious building built between 1646 and 1661 on the initiative of the Brotherhood of the White Penitents. This group, often associated with devotional and charitable practices, has marked local history with its spiritual and community commitment. The building, typical of the religious architecture of the time, reflects the religious and social aspirations of the region in the mid-17th century.
During the French Revolution, the chapel suffered some damage, like many religious buildings of the time. These deteriorations, although not detailed in the sources, bear witness to the political and religious upheavals that passed through France in the late eighteenth century. Despite these trials, the building survived and was subsequently restored.
The bell tower of the chapel was rebuilt between 1819 and 1821 by Sieur Noille de Chamberet, for a cost of 300 francs. This intervention, which took place in the early nineteenth century, illustrates local efforts to preserve and embellish religious heritage after revolutionary unrest. In 1844, work was also carried out on the partially collapsed roof, confirming the attention paid to the maintenance of this place of worship.
The chapel was listed as a historic monument by decree of 27 July 1932, thus recognizing its heritage value. Today, it belongs to the municipality of Treignac and remains an architectural and historical testimony of religious and community life in Corrèze since the seventeenth century.
