Chapelle du Saint-Sepulcre : classification by decree of 16 August 1932

Origin and history

The chapel of the Holy Sepulchre of Peyrolles-en-Provence is a 12th century religious building. Located in the commune of Peyrolles-en-Provence, in Bouches-du-Rhône, it has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1932. This classification, carried out by ministerial decree, protects the integrity of the chapel, property of the commune.

Its architecture and history reflect the importance of medieval places of worship in this Provençal region. In the 12th century, Provence was marked by intense religious and cultural activity, with the construction of many sacred buildings. Chapels such as that of the Holy Sepulchre served as places of prayer and pilgrimage, often linked to crusades or local devotion.

Their presence also strengthened the central role of the Church in the social and spiritual organization of rural communities. The chapel of Peyrolles-en-Provence takes place in this context, although its specific historical details remain partially documented.
