Origin and history

The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic religious building located in Saint-Denis, on the island of La Réunion, French overseas department and region of the Indian Ocean. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it is distinguished by its architecture and its role in local heritage. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, a central dogma of Catholicism, and is located at the corner of Sainte-Anne and Paris streets, in downtown Saint-Denis.

The chapel has been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since June 6, 1988, a recognition that protects its 19th century stained glass windows. In 1993, the attractive house, located at 12 rue Sainte-Anne, was also classified in its entirety. Since 2017, the chapel has been home to the island's only pipe organ, in German Baroque style, enhancing its cultural and musical importance. These elements make this site an emblematic place for the heritage of Réunion.

The management of the monument is carried out by a cult association, which emphasizes its anchoring in local religious and community life. Although the sources mention precise coordinates and cadastral references (see AH 352 for the chapel and AH 235 for the house), little information is available on its current accessibility, such as visits, room rental or possible guest rooms. Its ranking, however, reflects its historical and architectural interest in the city of Saint-Denis and the island of La Réunion.
