Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Comfort Chapel is a 16th-century Catholic building located in Berhet, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Founded in 1523 by the lords of Perrier, it is dedicated to Notre-Dame and presents a simple plan with a rectangular nave, a south porch and a western bell tower. Its modest but neat architecture suggests a vocation of pilgrimage.

Inside, the walled frame reveals carved sandstones and entrances, while the abside is pierced from a large bay with harpsichords decorated with figures. Ranked a historic monument since August 16, 1922, the chapel illustrates Breton religious art of the Renaissance. Its location one kilometre from the parish church emphasizes its role as a seigneurial chapel and a place of devotion.

The chapel, owned by the commune, retains architectural elements typical of the small seigneurial foundations of the time. Its present state and ranking make it a valuable testimony to the religious and social history of the region, although its exact use as a place of pilgrimage is not detailed in the available sources.
