Origin and history

The Notre-Dame de la Baie Olive chapel is built in Saint-François, Guadeloupe, on a site classified as a protected area of the Conservatoire du Littoral since 2003. It dominates the Anse at the Bay and integrates into an arid coastal landscape, swept by winds, where vegetation is composed of resistant plants such as the Bord-de-Mer potato. According to local tradition, it was built in the location where the Virgin Mary would have granted graces, making it a place of popular devotion.

The chapel is the starting point of a 3 km hike leading to the Anse à l'Eau, including a cross road and stairs down to the beach. Every January 1st, a procession goes there: participants bathe in the sea by rubbing with a tail of cod to purify the "bad waves" of the past year, before drying with local foliage. This practice combines religious belief and traditional ritual rooted in Guadeloupe culture.

The surrounding protected area is home to a specific avian fauna, such as the Sanderling Sanderfish or the Petite Terne, and a flora adapted to dry conditions, including mancenilliers and coconut trees near the beaches. However, the proliferation of sargasses in 2024-2025 severely damaged the lagoon of Anse à l'Eau, causing the degradation of tourist facilities such as benches and carbets.

The legend associated with the chapel, although not dated precisely, illustrates the importance of Marian narratives in the Antillean communities, where places of worship are often linked to syncretic practices. The procession of 1 January, combining Christian elements and local traditions, reflects this cultural hybridization. The site, managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral, combines natural, religious and cultural heritage.
