Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette des Glières chapel is part of a collection of historic monuments located in Lanslevillard, Savoie. These buildings, dated between the 16th and 19th centuries, illustrate the religious and community life of a mountain parish. Their simple architecture, often rectangular and without apse, reflects the practical needs of the inhabitants, linked to protection against calamities and agro-pastoral activities. The chapels served as places of devotion for the local populations, in connection with their daily life in mountain areas.
The lateral walls of these chapels usually frame the facade, creating a characteristic advance. Few of them retain murals, with the notable exception of the chapel Saint-Jean-Baptiste, which houses a composition from the late 16th century. These buildings, listed as historical monuments by decree of 7 June 1994, bear witness to the importance of protective saints in the lives of rural communities, each meeting specific needs such as the prevention of ills or the blessing of passages.
The ensemble, owned by the municipality of Lanslevillard, includes several chapels dedicated to different saints (Sainte-Anne, Saint-Roch, Saint-Étienne, etc.), each located in a specific place. Their location, sometimes approximate as for the chapel of the Glières, reflects their integration into the landscape and their role in the spatial and spiritual organization of the territory. These monuments, though modest, are essential markers of the religious and cultural heritage of the Montagnard Savoy.
The chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette, located in the place called Les Glières, is part of this tradition. Like others, it was a gathering point for local devotions, often related to agricultural cycles, movements or the dangers of the mountain. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the religious and social practices of Savoyard communities throughout the centuries.
The sources available, including Monumentum, underline the importance of these chapels as material witnesses to a faith rooted in everyday life. Their sober architecture and their scattered settlement in the hamlets reveal a decentralized religious organization, adapted to the geographical constraints and lifestyles of the inhabitants. These elements make them valuable study objects for the rural and religious history of the region.
Finally, the listing of these chapels as historical monuments in 1994 has helped to protect a fragile heritage, often threatened by abandonment or modern transformation. Their value lies as much in their architectural dimension as in their collective memory role, embodying the fears, hopes and traditions of past generations.
