Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation chapel, also known as the Chapel of the Penitents-Blancs, is located in the hamlet of Piène-Haute, on the commune of Breil-sur-Roya, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Dating from the 19th century according to historical monuments, it is distinguished by its simple architecture: a rectangular plan with flat bedside, a facade surmounted by a triangular pediment, and an interior decorated with neogothic decorations painted around the mid-19th century. The building, enclosed between houses, houses a unique nave and a vaulted choir.

The chapel is managed by the brotherhood of the White Penitents of Piène-Haute, under the patronage of Saint Elizabeth. It was listed as historic monuments on 7 April 1992, recognizing its heritage value. Its interior decoration, typical of the neo-Gothic style, reflects the artistic and religious influences of the time, while at the same time testifying to the importance of the brotherhoods in local life.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its registration as a protected element (cadastre N 1362) and its precise address: 5024 Piène Haute, 06540 Breil-sur-Roya. The building, although modest, illustrates the religious and architectural heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, marked by buildings adapted to mountain villages.
