Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel of Chaudes-Aigues is a religious building located in the Cantal region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is linked to a Marian cult centered on a 15th century Pietà, which once attracted many pilgrims. Although its origin was ancient, the present chapel was almost entirely rebuilt between 1840 and 1860, incorporating various architectural elements.
The chapel combines Gothic styles, visible in its dogid vaults and its openings, and classics, such as its bell tower-porch with an imperial roof and its triangular pediment portal. Inside, the painted decorations and neo-Gothic woodwork, as well as the vaults of the choir adorned with golden rinceaux on azure background, create a rich and elaborate atmosphere. The stained glass, probably from the Thévenot workshop, completes this artistic ensemble.
Listed as historical monuments by order of 27 September 2006, the chapel now belongs to the commune of Chaudes-Aigues. Its history reflects both an ancient local devotion and an ambitious reconstruction in the 19th century, marking its heritage and religious importance.
