Origin and history

The Notre Dame des Ortia Chapel, located in Pluviner, Morbihan, is a religious building whose oldest parts date back to the Romanesque era. It was enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries, thus combining various architectural elements. The chapel is distinguished by its structure divided into two parts separated by a transverse wall pierced by ogival openings. The older choir features a square bedside decorated with a flamboyant window, while the nave dates from the 15th century. This monument was listed as historical monuments on June 15, 1925.

According to a local legend, a young mute pastourelle saw an apparition of Notre-Dame aux Orties, a place called Pluviner. The Virgin would have asked her for a lamb, and the girl, miraculously endowed with the word, offered the animal after obtaining permission from her father. The Virgin then asked for the construction of a chapel on this site. A statue of Notre Dame, discovered on a stone in the middle of the nettles, disappeared several times before returning to its original location, confirming the choice of place for building the chapel.

In 1801 Pope Pius VII gave the chapel a jubilee, celebrated every first Sunday in July. This religious privilege reinforces the spiritual and historical importance of the site. The chapel, owned by the commune of Pluvigner, remains a place of devotion and architectural witness to the stylistic evolutions between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Brittany.
