Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-du-Rhun Chapel is a religious building located in Guipavas, Finistère department, Brittany. Built in the 16th century, it replaces an earlier church attributed to Saint Thudon in the 7th century. Its Breton name Rûn means "hill", because it is built 93 metres above sea level. The chapel is distinguished by its gable bell tower, typical of Breton architecture, framed by two base buttresses enlarged by a corbellation bearing a balustrade. The building, with three naves covered by a frame, houses a statue of Our Lady of the Reun, a Madonna with the Child venerated locally.

The chapel underwent several restorations, notably in 1805, then after the fighting of the Brest Liberation in August 1944, which severely damaged its arrow. It was rebuilt in 1952. The bell tower and façade, which are remarkable elements of the monument, were classified as historical monuments by order of 22 July 1914. The chapel, owned by the municipality of Guipavas, is located Place Saint-Eloi, a central place for local religious and architectural heritage.

Saint Thudon, a figure associated with the early foundation of the chapel in the 7th century, embodies the ancient link between this site and the Christianization of Brittany. Although the current chapel dates from the 16th century, its history reflects a cultural and architectural continuity, marked by destruction and reconstruction. The characteristics of the bell tower, with its foothills and balustrade, illustrate the adaptation of medieval techniques to the specificities of Brittany. Today, the chapel remains a symbol of the religious and historical heritage of Guipavas, integrated into the protected monuments of the Finistère.
