Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-Libératrice chapel of Salins-les-Bains, located in the Jura in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a votive chapel built in the seventeenth century. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has been classified as a historical monument since 28 February 1931. Its architecture is characterized by an oval plan surmounted by a dome covered with Burgundy varnished tiles, with a copper rooster of 700 kg, the largest of Franche-Comté.
The building of the chapel, between 1649 and 1662, was initiated by the local population to thank the Virgin for preserving Salins-les-Bains from the epidemics and ravages of the Thirty Years War. Originally isolated, it was integrated into the city hall built between 1718 and 1739, marking its anchor in the urban landscape.
Its status as a historic monument, acquired in 1931, protects its remarkable elements, including the dome and the girouette. Owned by the commune, the chapel bears witness to Marian devotion and Baroque religious architecture in Franche-Comté, while illustrating the urban history of Salins-les-Bains, linked to its thermal and strategic past.
