Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-Pitié-Dieu chapel, located in Crannes-en-Champagne in the Pays de la Loire, was built in 1524. This historic monument, entirely classified by decree of 15 June 2017, is distinguished by its sober but elegant architecture, typical of the rural religious buildings of the Renaissance. Its arches, decorated with stencils, adorn both the nave and the lateral chapels, offering a rare testimony of 16th century artistic techniques.

According to Abbé Joseph Vavasseur, author of a monograph published in 1923, the construction of the chapel would be attributed to the generosity of Gilles Hommède, then parish priest of Luché. The building has gone through the centuries with few modifications, thus preserving its authenticity. Owned by the municipality, it remains an emblematic place of local heritage, although its exact location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).

The protected elements include the entire chapel, bounded by a plan annexed to the order of inscription. Although its current use (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the sources, its status as a Historic Monument makes it a site of major heritage interest for the Sarthe and the Pays de la Loire region.
