Origin and history

The Saint-Antoine Chapel of the Courcôme Cemetery originated in the Middle Ages, although the present building dates from a reconstruction attested by a notarial act of 1680. This document marks the renovation of the building, now characterized by a simple rectangular structure, covered with limestone lauzes. The walls, mounted dry with squared bellows, reflect a rustic but durable construction technique, typical of the small rural chapels of the time.

The western gate, decorated with a third-point arch, is the most remarkable architectural element. Its archvolt rests on two sculpted caps of faces, adding a rare decorative touch for a building of this size. Above the gate, a large bay in the middle of the hanger illuminates the interior, highlighting the functional sobriety of the place. The chapel, protected as a Historic Monument since 1979, now belongs to the commune of Courcôme and bears witness to local religious history.

The irregular apparatus of the walls and the absence of mortar suggest rapid construction, possibly linked to urgent community needs or limited resources. The choice of lauze, flat stones typical of the region, indicates an adaptation to locally available materials. Although modest, this building illustrates 17th century rural religious architecture in Poitou-Charentes, where simplicity and functionality prevailed over ornamentation.

The location of the chapel in the enclosure of the cemetery underlines its role in funeral rites and collective memory. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments in 1979 preserved this heritage, often threatened by forgetfulness or urban transformation. Today, it remains an identity marker for Courcôme, a village in the Charente located in New Aquitaine.
