Chapelle Saint-Antoine-l'Hermite : inscription by order of 12 December 1936

Origin and history

Saint-Antoine-l'Ermite Chapel is a religious building located in Breil-sur-Roya, Alpes-Maritimes. Built in the 18th century, it was outside the city walls, near the Genoa gate, at the southern exit of the village in the Roya valley. Its strategic location allowed pilgrims and travelers to gather and ask for the protection of St.Antoine before crossing often dangerous roads.

The chapel is covered with a roof of lauzes, typical of local architecture. It was listed as historic monuments on December 12, 1936, recognizing its heritage importance. Today, it remains a testimony to the popular devotion and religious history of the region.

At the time of its construction, Breil-sur-Roya was an important crossing point between France and Italy. Chapels on the outskirts of the villages played a key role in the spiritual and social life of the communities, providing a refuge and a place of prayer for travellers and residents. These buildings also reflected concerns about safety and divine protection in areas often exposed to natural or human hazards.
