Origin and history

Saint-Aubert Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel located on a rocky outgrowth at the northwest end of Mont-Saint-Michel. This small building of elementary Romanesque style, rectangular, is covered with a two-slope roof and pierced with two windows in the middle of the hangar. A statue of Saint Aubert adorns its gable, recalling its link with the founding legend of the Mount.

According to tradition, the chapel was erected around the twelfth century, probably under the abbatiate of Robert de Torigni (1154–1186), in honor of Saint Aubert, bishop of Avranches. Legend has it that at this location, a pagan rock (perhaps an ancient menhir) was miraculously overthrown by the intervention of an infant held by Aubert, after twelve men had failed to move him. This rock, called Pic-Saint-Aubert, served as a base for the chapel.

The building, classified as a historical monument in 1908, symbolizes both the Christian anchoring of the Mount and the popular medieval beliefs mixing paganism and miracles. Its isolated location and legendary history make it a unique testimony to the Norman spirituality of the Middle Ages.

Today, the chapel belongs to the commune of Mont-Saint-Michel. Although modest in size, it embodies a religious, architectural and folk heritage, complementing the monumental ensemble of the site.

Sources such as Monumentum and Wikipedia confirm its ranking among historical monuments, as well as its precise address in the Merimée base (cadastre AB 130).
