Chapelle Saint-Aubin (vestiges de l'Ancienne) (Box D 154): Order of 16 March 1966
Origin and history
The Saint-Aubin de Fitou Chapel, located in the Aude department, is a religious building dating from the Middle Ages. It is distinguished by its overpassed arches, typical of Mozarabic pre-Roman architecture, and a unique nave extended by a flat bedside. Its walled environment has led some historians to assume that it could have been a maladry, although this hypothesis remains debated.
Ranked a historic monument in 1966, the chapel retains notable architectural elements, such as a thick triumphal arch and slightly oversized lateral arches. Accelerated to the nave, a vaulted building could be an oratory, while a ruined building nearby, with an arch in the middle, evokes a possible presbytery or priory. These remains testify to its evolution over the centuries.
The chapel is located near an ancient path, which reinforces its historical importance in the region. Its classification protects the remains of the old chapel, including its load-loading equipment and its cradle vault. Despite its partial state, it remains a rare example of medieval religious architecture in southern France.
