Chapelle Saint-Barthélémy: inscription by decree of 22 December 1941

Origin and history

The chapel Saint-Barthélemy de Mougins is a 10th century religious monument located in the commune of Mougins, in the department of Alpes-Maritimes. Its octagonal architecture, rare for a Christian edifice, evokes the martyria of primitive Christianity, with an apse in the hemicycle and a small bell tower above the bedside. This particular plan could be a survival of the first places of worship dedicated to martyrs.

The chapel was listed as historic monuments on December 22, 1941, recognizing its heritage value. It is also characterized by a porch housing its entrance, an architectural element notable. Owned by the commune of Mougins, it is located at 1 Chemin Saint-Barthélemy, in a typical setting of the Azurean hinterland.

In the historical context of the tenth century in Provence, chapels like Saint Barthélemy played a central role in community life, serving as places of prayer, gathering and sometimes refuge. Their construction often reflected the influence of local architectural traditions, mixing Roman heritage and medieval innovations. These buildings also marked the rural landscape, symbolizing the progressive Christianization of the territories.
