Origin and history

The Saint-Claude Chapel, known as the Black Penitents, is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Saorge, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Built in the second half of the 17th century, it illustrates the late Baroque architecture typical of the region. Its portal bears the registration of the year 1873, probably related to a restoration or subsequent modification. The building, of sober style, reflects the influence of the brotherhoods of penitents, very active in Provence at that time.

The chapel was listed as historic monuments on 19 July 1974, recognizing its heritage value. Today, it hosts the municipal library of Saorge, giving it a dual cultural and historical vocation. Its location on Rue Louis Périssol (or Cassa-Longua according to sources) makes it a central point of the village, marked by its medieval history and its preserved religious heritage.

The Black Penitents, a secular brotherhood dedicated to charity and devotion, played a major social role in the villages of Provence. These groups, often organized by trades or neighbourhoods, participated in processes, charitable works and accompaniment of the deceased. The chapel Saint-Claude, like other similar buildings, served as a meeting place and prayer for these brotherhoods, strengthening community ties.

The building, owned by the municipality, is characterized by simple but elegant architecture, with attenuated baroque elements. Its inscription in historical monuments has preserved its original characteristics, despite contemporary uses such as library. The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) underline its importance in the local cultural and religious landscape, as well as its integration into the historical urban fabric of Saorgian.
