Origin and history
The Saint-Cosne Chapel, located in the village of Perol in Prondines, is a small rural sanctuary whose origins date back to the Romanesque period. The sculpted capitals of the nave and the axial bay of the apse, in full hangar, bear witness to this medieval period. These architectural elements are characteristic of auvergnat Romanesque art, marked by ornamental sobriety and structural robustness.
The building has undergone several changes over the centuries. The southeast bay of the apse, in third-point, suggests changes that occurred after the Romanesque period, probably in Gothic times. The doors and windows of the nave, on the other hand, seem to date from the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting stylistic and functional adaptations linked to the liturgical needs and architectural evolutions of these epochs.
Classified as a Historic Monument since 19 February 1982, the chapel Saint-Cosne is now owned by the commune of Prondines. Its inclusion in the inventory of Historical Monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local religious history. The location of the chapel, in a preserved rural setting, reinforces its emblematic character of the Auvergnat heritage.
