Chapelle Saint-Georges (Box B 54): Order of 20 August 1976
Origin and history
The Chapel of Saint George of Valle-d'Orezza, located in the Corsican village of the same name, is a religious building dating back to the 11th century. It is distinguished by a nave covered with a structure and a teghie (lauze) roof, typical of the region. Its shale walls, alternating wide and thin seats, as well as its western door with rectangular lintel elongated in full hanger, reflect a neat construction for the era. An arcade bell, later added to the eastern wall, marks a later architectural evolution.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1976, the chapel experienced a turbulent history: partially destroyed in the 15th century, it was restored in the 16th century. His orientation is, in keeping with Christian tradition, and his pediment adorned with an openworked cross emphasizes his sacred character. The chapel thus illustrates the architectural and religious transformations of medieval and modern Corsica, while remaining a place of community memory.
The current structure therefore combines primitive novel elements (door, walls) and more recent additions (clocheton), reflecting the cultural needs and local know-how throughout the centuries. The property of the commune today embodies the religious and historical heritage of Upper Corsica, between medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations.
